Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) - Remind @pattengine
SEE GOOGLE CLASSROOM!!!!!
Over the next couple weeks, you will work on a STEM Career Project.
It is a much more extensive version of what we have done in the past.
Each section should be completed and sent to me by the due date, so I can go through and give you feedback.
Please e-mail me or remind text me any questions along the way, please read all directions first.
***Feel free to use additional websites, these are just some helpful ones.
This project is to be a detailed 5 year plan. Each section should contain as much detail as is reasonable. Each section should include not simply an answer to each question, but a detailed summary as to: how you plan on achieving this goal, a discussion of how long it will take and why it will take that long, any financial devices you will use (loans, grants, scholarships, military GI bill, gifts, personal savings, etc.), and a detailed budget. You may present your plan in any way you like (powerpoint, essay, presi, etc.), but it should be at least 1 page, or 2 slides for every section. You must choose a career off this list of STEM jobs: https://www.onetonline.org/find/stem?t=0
Section 1: Due by 3/18
Economic Biography and Career Choice: The first section should be an economic biography of you; including the human capital you have attained (education, job experience, etc.). Include the following in this section:
i. Where will you go to school?
ii. What degree/certification will you achieve? If none, how will you plan to build your human capital?
iii. What is the job outlook for your degree/certification/job (what is the likelihood of getting hired in the future)?
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/ecopro.t06.htm
Describe the job you are seeking and/or have obtained. Include relevant information regarding benefits received, salary, and hours involved. Use REAL examples of jobs in this industry to gather your information, in the area of the nation you wish to live. Use real examples of jobs available. If you cannot find a specific salary range, then use a site that gives a range and use the salary at the lowest end of the range. Document all information. Include the following in this section:
i. Job description and location
ii. Salary (Do not choose a job that requires many years of experience.)
http://www.careeronestop.org/SalariesBenefits/SalariesBenefits.aspx
iii. Benefits received
Describe how you will pay for building your human capital: If you plan on using a military GI bill, how much will it cover? What are some restrictions to how the money is used? How much will you have to pay back?
Section 2: Due by 3/25
Home: You need to find a place to live in the area of the country where your job will be located. Find a REAL example of housing in which you would be willing to live. (Include pictures if possible.) Explain why you chose this option. Include all relevant amenities. (Apartments do not come furnished. If it says the option is available, it is not part of the price quoted.) Include the monthly rent (if a house, include the mortgage type and mortgage payment – don’t forget to add in taxes and insurance). Include in this section:

http://www.libertymutual.com/home-insurance/renters-insurance/renters-coverage-calculator
One-time Costs: Find out how much money you will need to pay up front for your apartment. Section 3: Due by 4/1
Saving / Investing: You need to make a saving and investment plan. Research what experts say you should do. First, determine how much money you will set aside for emergency savings. Then, determine how much you will save (or other retirement plan). Be sure to include an emergency fund that is separate from your regular savings.
Choose a banking institution: Compare at least three banks, using at least four different criteria. Introduce the section with a summary of your decision. These financial institutions should be located in the area you have chosen to live in Section C.

Summarize all of the information you included in sections 1, 2, and 3 as if you were to present your project.
This should only be a snapshot as if you were to hand out the key information.
This can be in paragraph or bullet form and should include information you struggled to find and any additional information you included.
